Wedding Flowers: Where to start

Sally-Ann Kotzé from Nonna’s Flowershop states that what influences a couples’ ideas for their wedding flowers the most is Pinterest. Unfortunately it’s not a South African website and it obviously has the most beautiful decorations and flowers but they are all imported so when you want a “Pinterest look” you need to know it will be expensive as imported flowers, whether ordered in small quantities or in bulk, will be pricey.

Wedding Flowers: Where to start

Not much of a reader? No problem! Watch the video version here:

1. Start off with your ceremony

Traditionally, when working out the various floral elements for your ceremony you need to ensure you have the following:

  • Bridal bouquet
  • Bridesmaids bouquet
  • Flower girl basket
  • Groom and groomsmen boutonnières or buttonholes
  • Aisle arrangements
  • Arch arrangement or focal point
  • Confetti

There’s plenty of different options depending on what type of wedding you want to have like an intimate wedding with extravagant floral installations; a large wedding that is simplistic with minimalistic flowers or visa versa. It all depends on your personal taste and your personality.

2. Moving on to the Pre-drinks

Couples tend to push their budget more towards catering and drinks for the pre-drinks and then ensure there is enough furniture i.e. seating and entertainment to ensure the guests can relax and enjoy themselves. When it comes to wedding flowers you as the couple can ensure for some arrangements on coffee and bar tables that pulls through the theme of your wedding.

It is important to assess your pre-drinks area first and see what it lends itself to. If you are getting married during summer and have a gorgeous outside pre-drinks area; wedding flowers are necessarily that important and needed.

3. The Grand Reception

Traditionally, when working out the various floral elements for your reception you need to ensure you have the following:

  • Decorative arrangement for the seating plan
  • Table centerpieces
  • Gift table arrangement

4. Your Floral Budget

It is best to start off by giving your florist your budget for your wedding flowers and then have them work around that. To budget for an intimate wedding of 20 guests put aside about R4 000 – R5 000. For a medium wedding no less than R11 000 because you’re going to have more tables and a large wedding no less than 20 to R40 000 depending on the theme you are going with.
