What is the Best Month to Get Married in South Africa?

The first, and most important decision you make when you start your wedding planning is the date. This choice is generally influenced by two big factors: your personal preference and venue availability. This means you need to consider what month of year you would ideally like to get married. Then, you need to find out if your preferred wedding venues are available for dates in that range. So one of the biggest questions everyone asks is; “What is the best month to get married in South Africa?”

We chat to some of SA’s top wedding planners and coordinators to find out what they think.

The Wedding Season in South Africa

Things are changing when it comes to the top months for weddings in South Africa. Ten years ago, we could have said with certainty that the best months are from November until March. However, now we see more and more weddings taking place out of season. The weather seems to be becoming more moderate, year-round. Meaning May and June, which are winter months, are now becoming quite popular for weddings.

March and April are also top choices, as it is inter-seasonal – not quite the cold of winter yet and no longer the boiling hot Cape summer weather.

The most popular answer is still obviously Summer. However, Cara Lee from Mosaic Weddings suggests skipping out on December weddings. That is prime tourist season in South Africa and everything is very busy. Not ideal for a private and relaxed wedding ceremony.

Another good month to consider is October. That is the beginning of the traditional wedding season, so vendors are eager to get going after the quieter winter months. Spring weddings also offer amazing blooms and florals across the country.

Winter Weddings in SOUTH AFRICA

If you’re looking at having a Winter Wedding you can probably look at dates between June and August. Winters in South Africa can offer you either a dramatic, rainy day or a cold but clear and sunny day. This means that outdoor weddings are not completely off the cards, however, we recommend having a backup, just in case it starts to rain.

For the perfect winter wedding atmosphere, have a look at finding a venue with a fireplace. And add some warm, romantic touches with loads of candles and lanterns. Keep your guests warm by serving soups and hearty stews. You can really have stunning Winter weddings in Cape Town. And the cherry on the cake? Often venues and suppliers will give favorable pricing for weddings during these months.

Plan for Bad Weather (just in case)

“If you plan for bad weather, if you plan for imminent weather I promise you, it won’t happen. But when you ignore that factor, that’s when you have trouble”, says Aleit Swanepoel. Any professional event planner will tell you to have a Plan B and Plan C lined up after your Plan A. You can spend months planning your wedding, only for the day to arrive along with rain and wind. To avoid heartache, make sure you have some backup options ready. This is especially important for destination weddings in South Africa. You wouldn’t want your guests to travel from all over the globe for a gloomy, rainy wedding day. In that case, you could just as well have held the wedding back home. To experience the true beauty and glory of Cape Town and South Africa, make sure you plan your wedding day perfectly and select a date that is best suited to what you want.winter weddings in cape town weather
