Wedding DJs and their role
In this blog, Sean from The Wedding DJ Company gives us some great tips and advice on Wedding DJs & their roles. Entertainment and Music play such a vital part of your day big in setting the mood and really getting the party going! It’s important that you pick a company that really knows what they’re doing. The Wedding DJ Company started in 2009. Up until that point, Sean had been a DJ for a number of years and worked in the service entertainment industry, where he ran large festivals and events. He saw an opportunity to take his year’s worth of experience working with some of the biggest acts in the country, and brought all of that into the Wedding Industry!
They focus on quality entertainment solutions for intimate gatherings like weddings. Imagine having a DJ that prepares upfront, does all his homework, and shows up looking the part! A good Wedding DJ can read the room, engage with the crowd, and deal with client requests. Good Wedding DJs know when to play your key songs to really elevate that specific moment, fade songs at the right time, and are also able to mix songs fluidly from one to the other. This cannot be overstated.

The most common questions bridal couple’s asks wedding DJs:
1. Can you supply sound for the entire day?
Most definitely! When they can’t do it, most companies can bring in subcontractors that do.
2. Can you assist with key moment music selection? Like beautiful tracks to walk come down the aisle or the first dance song?
Most definitely! A lot of Wedding DJs work with multiple clients that give them music, so they collect a lot of good song choices.
3. Brides ask how to choose their Wedding DJ?
Step one is getting along with your Wedding DJ on an interpersonal level. Is it somebody you communicate with? Can ask you them on the day for a specific song? The biggest factor is giving him or her a clear brief by asking specific questions about what’s his favorite styles of music, what does he or she likes, does he or she engage with the crowd. All of those questions are very important.
Live Music and Entertainment
Most of the time bridal couples want to add a live music element to their wedding day’s entertainment, but they don’t want to break the bank. They don’t want to do something it’s too domineering and taking over the entire event. We always say the best way to achieve that is by adding on a live musician to the DJ set. The Wedding DJ Company does a lot of work with Saxophone players, Trumpeters, Keyboard players, Marimba players, and even Guitarists. It’s amazing and very interactive!
About the DJ Booth
Step one is to brief the Wedding DJ and make sure that the DJ booth is about a meter tall. DJs put a lot of emphasis and a lot of effort into making the show look really good, and a nice DJ booth makes a big difference! Second thing is to put the DJ booth next to the dance floor. You’d be surprised how many people have the DJs booth meters away from the dance floor. DJs need to be involved with the crowd, not to mention they’ve got lights, smoke machines, and all kinds of things going on at the DJ booth!
The third thing, probably the most important element for any wedding, is that you make sure the dance floor is near the bar. This really helps consolidate the overall party and makes a massive difference. For small intimate weddings, you will never have loud music where your ears hurt. You would want it to be warm, crisp, and clear. If the DJ rocks it and the sound is amazing, it really elevates the event to the next level!
Booking Wedding DJs
Wedding DJs get a lot of inquiries every week but not all those inquiries turn into bookings. So if the bridal couple is serious, they’ll pencil in the date and hold that date for them. If another booking comes in for that DJ or band on that specific day, they will let you know and give you a deadline to book their services and pay the deposit. The Wedding DJ Company offers the entire package for the whole wedding day. Everything from sound for the ceremony, pre-drinks entertainment, dinner, and dance music.
What does Wedding DJs Cost?
For sound and lighting, the average price you’re looking at is between R17 000 and R21 000 for a full day of entertainment. That’s a DJ up until one o’clock in the morning! Peak season typically runs from December to March, but in our experience, the busiest times of the year are February, March, and April. That’s the best time of the year as far as weather is concerned in Cape Town.
