When did you meet and how did he propose?
We were both 1st year students at NWU in 2016. We met in class when he offered to help me with our programming module and started dating a few months after that. I immediately fell in love with his patience and kind heart, I knew I wanted to marry him. He surprised me at the end of 2019 with a romantic picnic next to the Mooi-River where he proposed. My heart filled with so much joy knowing that he will become my husband.
What was the style or Inspiration for your wedding day?
With a hundred Pinterest pictures and ideas, I didn’t really know what style I wanted. I really struggled to find a florist and about 3 months before our wedding I got referred to Lizelle from Pronkertjie. And what a blessing! I immediately went to her Instagram page and knew that she would be able to transform my Pinterest pictures into something unique and beautiful. I sent her all my ideas – one being of her own work that I saw on her page. We met for coffee and immediately after I told my husband that she and her team were perfect. The style was modern and minimalistic. Lizelle and her team are the best and transformed my idea into something even more beautiful than I could’ve imagined.
Who were your suppliers and why did you choose them?
Oakfield Farm Wedding Venue was the second venue that we went to view and when we walked into the Dairy chapel, I was in awe of the beauty and the intimate feel of the reception area. Knowing we wanted a small wedding; we immediately booked the venue.
Our photographer was Aline from Agape Photography. I booked her without thinking twice. She is extremely talented and has the kindest soul. Our videographer was Marzaan from Voetpad Fotografie. I LOVED her work! She is the coolest person ever and had such a fun energy on the day. Both Aline and Marzaan were absolute blessings.
My wedding dress was the opposite of what I had in mind. But when I saw the dress at Whimsical Bridal I fell in love with the detail. I remember saying that I’m just going to try it on to see. I didn’t want to fit another dress because I knew it was the one.
My makeup was done by Monique from Moniq. Her work is perfect, she made us all glow. My hair, done by Zelna Pienaar, completed the look perfectly. My bridesmaids, mother and mother-in-law looked breath-taking, all thanks to these wonderful ladies.
The Allora Collection designed our stationery. I loved every detail of it. From the guestbook design up to the seating board, it complemented our style perfectly. Keepsake Creative printed our personalised guestbook. Reading all our guests’ messages with their polaroid photos the day after the wedding filled my heart with so much emotion and love. We loved the custom design of our ring box from Lilly Leigh Co. Our wedding cake from Appelliefie Cake Artistry was stunning and delicious. The colours and look of the wedding cake were simplistic but unique, it was exactly what I had in mind.
What was the highlight of your wedding day?
After postponing our wedding with one year, I think the highlight is the blessing of celebrating our marriage will all our loved ones. The day itself was without a doubt perfect. All our suppliers were simply amazing. Every detail was perfect. But for us the best part was to just celebrate our marriage with our friends and family.
Any tips or advice for bride’s planning their wedding day? // What was your experience in planning a wedding during lockdown?
Make your marriage more beautiful than your wedding day. During the pandemic it can be extremely emotional to plan a wedding with all the uncertainties and regulations. It is difficult to describe the feeling when you need to postpone or make changes due to the change in curfew, or the number of guests allowed. My advice? Be disappointed and cry it out. I certainly did! But be hopeful and remember that the day is about marrying your best friend. Even though it is not exactly what you’ve always dreamt about, it can still be the best first day of your marriage. Being married is the greatest blessing of all.
Did you do anything differently compared to the traditional wedding customs?
I think we have such a unique story. The most untraditional thing about our wedding day was that it was on our one-year wedding anniversary. We planned our wedding for the 5th of June 2020, but due to the pandemic and uncertainty we postponed the wedding date with one year to the 5th of June 2021. One week before the 5th of June 2020 we decided to get married anyway. The main reason for this was that although we postponed our wedding date with one year, we didn’t want to postpone our marriage with a year as well. It was the best decision. I had the extreme privilege of marrying my best friend twice!
Is there anything you would’ve done differently looking back?
Not one thing. I love our story and how everything unfolded. I remember being extremely disappointed when we needed to postpone our wedding, but it was a blessing in disguise. In 2020, I didn’t have a florist, videographer, or even a cake supplier. The most amazing suppliers only crossed my path this year and for that I’m so grateful.
