Real Wedding: A Romantic Small Wedding in the Overberg
Newlyweds, Yannis and Estée share their real-life love story with Pink Book. Take a look at their amazing, intimate small wedding in the woods at De Uijlenes in the Overberg. Their special day was captured by professional photographer, Stephanie Veldman. Bride Estée tells us more:
The Start of a Love Story
Our relationship started as a holiday romance in Mozambique in 2011 where we met through our respective childhood friends (who were a couple at the time and are now also married). We had an instant connection and talked every day after the holiday had ended. Yannis was studying in Pretoria and I was based in Stellenbosch. After about a year and half of doing the long-distance thing, Yannis relocated to the Western Cape after he graduated. We have been together ever since!
When Yannis finally proposed in October 2017, after 6 years of dating, I was over the moon. He designed my engagement ring himself with the help of my roommate and best friend from University, Carla Maxine. She made my engagement ring as well as our wedding bands and sent it all the way from Australia!
Planning the Big Day
When it came to the wedding planning, we had very similar ideas of what we wanted. This meant the planning went rather smoothly. We decided to have a whole weekend wedding in order to spend more time with our loved ones. One day just goes by so quickly. This also made it worthwhile for our guests travelling from far. Because of this, we needed a small wedding venue where we could get married on Friday, with enough accommodation for most of our guests. The very first (and only) venue we went to look at had everything we wanted. And when they welcomed our four-legged child with open arms we instantly knew it was the one. De Uijlenes is absolutely beautiful with such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were amazing and so accommodating with all our requests and ideas. They catered a market style buffet with multiple food stalls.
Choosing the photographer was easy, even though there are so many amazing photographers to choose from. Stephanie Veldman had photographed our friends’ weddings and I absolutely love her style. She was also the one who recommended our videographer, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. They all captured the atmosphere and emotion of the day which is exactly what we wanted.
Two Wedding Dresses – A Dream Come True
Choosing a wedding dress was a bit more tricky, I went for a few fittings and tried a lot of different styles. I had a rough idea of what I wanted but found it difficult to make a decision. I was lucky enough to get the best of both: a full skirt as well as a fitted more classic gown.
Cindy Bam was exceptionally helpful through the process of choosing a dress. She listened to all the minor details while I was babbling along. In the end, she created a perfect, elegant dress that fitted me like a glove! She ordered the fabric for my veil and her team glued all the flowers on by hand. My family and I hand-painted the flowers to match the colour scheme of our wedding. Cindy’s patience and guidance through the journey was such a comfort. Even when she had to make a last-minute adjustment just a few days before the wedding!
My dreams came true when I won a second wedding dress at a wedding expo, from Safanja Couture. Liese Morgan made me feel like a princess in a sparkly lace top with hand-sewn beads and sequins and a beautiful long, soft and silky skirt that went full circle on the dance floor! She also made my mother’s dress with only two fittings. It was such a pleasure to have her on my team.
The bridesmaid dresses were made by Suné Snyman, she went out of her way in order to get the fabric in the exact colours that I wanted. She also did late night fittings and last-minute adjustments to accommodate my bridesmaids’ timetables and long-distance travelling.
Small Wedding Venue, A Warm and Festive sitting
Although we knew that we wanted a colourful festive wedding with no arranged seating, pulling it off would be a challenge! Especially with our busy schedules and limited time for planning and logistics. Johanita Potgieter from Iets Niets events made all our dreams come true. She exceeded all my expectations with the flowers and décor for the wedding. She helped us with sourcing our vendors and planning the timeline of the day. She was there to make sure everything went smoothly, which it absolutely did. She was so supportive and was the sole reason I didn’t turn into a bridezilla! Her help, along with the help, patience, and support of our family and friends, ensured that we had the most wonderful wedding day! We plan on having a vow renewal many years from now and will definitely be using the same vendors.
